Japan's growing marijuana problem

Although I am by no means any sort of otaku, maybe one day I can be. Pinktentacle, among other sites, have opened my internet-crawling mind to the awesome and fascinating stuff coming out of Japan.

Blogs like Japanator, Japan Probe, and TOKYOMANGO make me realize just how uncool I would be if I lived in Japan. They, among others, are a great starting point for everyone unacquainted with Japanese popular culture.

Start here, a nice list over at pinktentacle, of 2008's top 60 words/phrases from Japan. A great launching point for a flurry of internet reading and self-education on cool Japanese shit.

That said, today on Japan Probe: it seems there is a "growing marijuana problem" amongst the nation's young people. (Take "growing" to mean both increased use and cultivation.) Or at least, the national media have painted a handful of recent marijuana-related cases as clear evidence of such a trend. It seems the Japanese powers that be have some of the same backwards, unfounded, downright ignorant attitudes and fears relating to marijuana that we here in TUSOA are dealing with.
